RS - ISAF Connect to Sailing partner
It is great to see ISAF taking such an active role in building grass roots sailing globally through the Connect to Sailing project. We are therefore pleased to be a key supporter of Connect to Sailing.
We are also immensely proud that RS boats are now a popular choice all around the world – and that we’ve worked with many National Sailing Authorities and other major organisations on projects to build the sport of sailing
Through our involvement with a number of significant National Authority projects we understand that we can play a much bigger part in the success of a project than simply selling boats. We now have considerable knowledge on many key elements:
- Partnerships
- Funding
- Boat specific training programmes
- Equipment specification
- Branding
- Project delivery
- Ongoing project support
Of course every situation is different - if you are considering a sailing participation project and would like to discuss these things in more detail please contact:

We have worked with many major national sail training projects in both developed and developing sailing nations - here are two examples:
Danish Sailing Association
In 2007 the Danish Sailing Association (DSU) recognised that sailing was not growing in Denmark – because it was not seen as exciting or accessible enough.
They created a project that aimed to build sailing at grass roots level, introduce more children to sailing and make it more fun to keep the new sailors involved – by equipping sailing clubs across the country with a modern two person boat and creating a training programme that could be run by parents or coaches.
The DSU felt that a two person boat was important for the social aspect and fun of sailing – it had to be modern and exciting to give a fresh image for sailing – and be strong and simple for club use. After evaluation of all the options the DSU selected the RS Feva for their project.
The DSU worked with sponsor TORM and RS to offer 100 RS Fevas to the clubs at a special price. The project was promoted to the clubs who ordered the boats direct from RS – we branded the boats with the sponsor’s graphics – delivered them to Denmark – worked with a local project manager to supply the boats to the clubs and give after sales support.
All 100 boats were ordered within a month and the project was so successful that a second phase of the project was run in 2009 – this time with a smaller boat suitable for younger children at novice stage. After testing all possible boats the RS Tera was selected and 200 boats were offered to the clubs, plus a further 75 RS Fevas.
The project has been a major overall success – with increased youth sailing in Denmark, many small clubs starting youth sailing and clubs succeeding in keeping young children sailing.
Oman Sail
Oman Sail was formed in 2008 with the aims to develop Oman into a sailing nation and attractive sailing destination. The brief was very broad – from training local sailors at novice level right through to competition and Omani recognition at an international level in a variety of sailing events.
RS became involved early on when Oman Sail opened its first sail training centre. A range of RS boats were selected to equip this centre, including the RS Tera and RS Q’BA. These boats are used for both novice training and for coaching within their racing programme for adults and junior sailors. They were selected due to their ease of use, many practical features, durability and, perhaps above all, sparkling performance to make sailing fun beyond the first learning days.
Oman Sail plan to open six more sailing centres in the coming years to train thousands of Omanis to sail. Following the successful first year of using RS boats, they plan that the majority of boats in all the centres will be RS.
