www.rssailing.com/training needs you...

This will be the 9th issue of this Newsletter since November 2006 and with, at last count, 890 of you receiving it, I wanted to ask you a couple of questions. What do you think is a positive aspect of this newsletter? Is it informational enough? Is it well presented and readable? and What else could I include? I am fully aware that you are all busy people but I would very much appreciate your feedback so that I can continue to work hard to build on the foundations we have established.

With future developments within the UK sailing industry set to create a rise in awareness of what our sport offers, the future looks to be very exciting for us here at RS. I have spoken to many people involved at Local Council level to NGB level and even Government representatives, and all have been quick to point out that grant applications have never been higher, awards have never been more fruitful and choice has never been more. Many of these bodies have stated that monies will only be given out to boats that have proved to be a benefit to sail training at national and international level as they are keen to increase our medal winning potential in 2012. RS is very fortunate to have the RYA Junior Class and ISAF International youth class recognition for the RS Feva and more recently ISAF recognition for the RS Tera with the first Tera Worlds taking place just before the Feva Worlds in Sweden next year. With the Feva only having had its 4th Birthday recently, this stunning boat is enjoying a flurry of interest from more Clubs, Schools and Centres than ever before. I do hope that all of you who do not yet know how the RS Feva could benefit your training fleet, give me a call or pop in to the Boat Show in London. Enjoy the newsletter and I'll see you all in 2008.

New home for RS Racing at the London Boat Show
11th – 20th January at ExCel - Stand: NO25C

Its that time of year again folks. Boat show season is looming with only a few weeks before we all start the mammoth task of setting up our stand at ExCel. We have moved this year and will now be found on stand NO25C, right next door to Topper and Laser. With a bigger stand, a new boat launch (see RS Q'
BA section below), ISAF recognition for the RS Tera and an RS Academy information area, the 2008 London Boat Show will be a really exciting time for us. I am personally looking forward to chatting to all of you who are coming up to find out more about fleet purchases or just generally wanting to catch up and let me know how your boats are doing and what we can do to make your lives easier at Club, Centre or School level.

If you are coming to the show and don’t want to have to wait while I finish a conversation with another club or school, why not let me know when you are coming and we can book ourselves an appointment. There is only me to deal specifically with clubs and schools and although my colleagues will be happy to assist in just as capable a fashion, I personally want to meet and chat to every single one of you. Let me know when you may be hitting London and the Show.

RS Q’BA orders and demonstrations

RS Racing are proud to be launching the new RS Q’
BA at the London Boat Show. We have spent a great deal of time and energy developing this boat and I would like as much feedback as you can possibly give me. Our boats develop with your input and without you it would be difficult to produce a boat that ticks so many boxes. RS and I in particular value all of your passion for sailing and invite you to share your thoughts.

RS Tera Loan Fleet - 6 Boats, one trailer and heaps of fun

Contact Dan for more information – Dan@RSsailing.com  or 07887 875015

The 2008 booking frenzy has begun. So many of you are already getting in touch. Please e-mail me if you have a cadet weekend or junior regatta you would like to borrow the Teras for. If you know the dates now, it’s a good time to get in contact.

RS Academies go from strength to strength

I am now in a position to consider Larger Non-RYA recognised clubs, commercial centres or larger Sailing / Yacht Clubs who are looking at developing their fleets, as future RS Academies. Please let me know if you are considering this venture. I am aiming to have an Academy per region by the end of next season. For more details of how to go about this visit the RS Academy page at www.rssailing.com

Plans to have 10 RS Academies within 2 years are well on their way with requests coming in from Outdoor and Watersports Centres in Northern Ireland, Wales, The Lake District and both East and West Midlands. Good news for my scheme and brilliant to see the spread creeping northwards. I always knew it was a matter of time and I’m really encouraged to be at the helm of this project.

NEW!

I have decided to run a Kit Review section in my newsletters to show you all some of the things that exist on the market, that we could all benefit from using. Thanks to all of you who have sent me ideas of what else I should be testing.

Over the last month or so I have been testing the ICOM IC-M33 Floating, Waterproof VHF Marine Transceiver, kindly loaned to me from Ian Lockyer of ICOM. I have been travelling the country doing my demos and also coaching pretty much every week so the radio has been used extensively. There are many features on the radio that I have found very useful.

  • Recessed on / off button separate to volume control which prevents accidental de-activation
  • Easy 9 button keypad with space enough between the buttons for useage with gloves not to be impossible.
  • 31 stage volume control which makes setting a comfortable level easy to manage.
  • Ability to operate after being totally immersed and a special vibrating noise function to clear water from the speaker after immersion, which stops the speaker noise being fuzzy. Floats if dropped in water.
  • Large Heavy duty Crocodile clip for clipping t buoyancy aid or Belt loop as well as a lanyard as an alternative or a back up.
  • Contoured shape to the unit to make holding easier – no cumbersome handsets that make long conversations hard work on the hand especially when trying to press the ptt button.

If you would like more info on this product or any other ICOM VHF’s then get in touch with your local dealer or visit www.icomuk.co.uk/marine  The full retail price for this unit is is £199.95 inc VAT.

Competition time and WINNERS

I decided a few weeks ago that it would be a good idea to do something fun while I was out on the road. If anyone spots the RS ‘A-Team’ Van on the road or at a club near you and can e-mail me the correct date and time that I was there, I will put all the names in the hat and the lucky winner will win an RS Racing Towel, the new must-have accessory in the locker room or on the beach for the 2008 season. There will also be a prize awarded for the best cup of tea made on club, school and centre demonstration days. The Challenge was set!

Congratulations to Tom Wilson from the Conway Centre in North Wales for e-mailing and correctly stating that the Van was indeed passing over the Britannia Bridge to the mainland from Anglesey on the afternoon of Tuesday 6th November and also a big thanks to all those at Sutton in Ashfield SC for the seemingly endless cups of tea and warm log burning stove. Even though it was trying to snow and I had to crack the ice off the boats in order to get the covers off, my fingers were warm that day because they were always wrapped around a cup of tea.

Your prizes are on their way to you now.

Fund raising idea...

For lots of clubs, the idea of raising funds is one that causes lots of hassle and the process is sometimes not very easy to follow. With my introduction, the Foneaid scheme has helped some clubs raise much needed funds this year. Get in touch with them to find out more.

A big thanks to all of you who are making my time matter. I have been to so many clubs and schools over the 14 months I have been in post and I am very much encouraged by your feedback. All of you are helping to make my job easier (busier but easier none-the-less)

I can only do as much as you let me do so if you have any ideas for me and for the RS team, please call me.

See you all during the winter and if you need any advice or have any training related queries, you know how to get hold of me.
