Comparative Review

If you are borrowing a boat and have not rung me to organise the loan of one of our training boats to act as a comparison then please do. I am keen to show off exactly how much work has gone into developing our APB range and would like you all to make a decision based on the use of our new boats and not an old club boat that has seen better days. This service is free and as part of it, myself or one of my dealers can come and talk you through the boat prior to use and not just drop it on your doorstep and expect you to put it together. It gives you the chance to see how it is rigged by someone who knows the boat and can answer any queries that may arise.

RS at the Southampton International Boat Show

Thanks to all of you that came and said hello at the show. It was a busy week for me. Interest in the RS Tera, Feva and Vision was phenomenal. I am looking forward to coming to do all of the Demo days I have been booked to do and all those that have yet to be booked in. Remember that this is a free service, designed to educate you as to how our range of All Purpose Boats can be used for training in your establishment.

A big thanks also to Guy Malpas (RDO for Thames Valley) for bringing all of his OBDO’s along to the stand and chatting about all of our training developments. This pro-active approach has resulted in a raft of enquiries for fleet development. Our institutional modifications are obviously proving a real success. For those of you that don’t yet know how I can help tailor our range of boats to suit your type of use, call me.

RS Q’BA orders and demonstrations

For any of you wanting to have a demonstration of the New RS Q’
BA, please call me to arrange a date in December or early next year. We will be launching this exciting new boat at the London Boat Show at Excel in January but advance demos will begin in December.

The brand new smaller sister to the RS Feva will have a wide waterline beam and wide comfortable side decks encouraging both adults and youngster alike to sit out and not in. The Q’
BA will have two rig options and an optional jib for when it is being used as a double hander. Length 3.53m, Beam 1.42m and weight around 60kg. Perfect for use as the backbone of all sail training courses.

The first 100 boats are available at special discount prices from £1,562 ex vat (depending on volume ordered) and if you fancy joining the queue to be one of the first few clubs and centres taking delivery in the spring, call me for a quote and arrange a demo day. Some of the larger outdoor training centres have already called for previews.

RS Loan Fleet

Contact Dan for more information – Dan@RSsailing.com or 07887 875015
  • The 2007 season proved to be a success and we will soon be taking bookings for the 6 Teras and our fleet of loan boats for 2008.

  • If you have an annual regatta or if you need to have some boats to see how the RS Range can compliment or enhance your existing fleet, ring me for a chat and I can help you show the club the type of boat needed for each specific need.

RS Academy update

At our International Dealers meeting at Hayling Island Sailing Club, three new countries discussed the merits and potential of becoming RS Academies. I’m happy to say that the feedback was all positive, with dealers expressing real gratitude that we are making an effort to build links with our training centres.
I am now in a position to consider Larger Non-RYA recognised clubs, commercial centres or larger Yacht Clubs as future RS Academies. Please let me know if you are considering this venture. I am aiming to have an Academy per region by the end of next season. For more details of how to go about this visit the RS Academy page at www.rssailing.com

Kit Review
As outdoor educationalists and Instructors, we need to be able to count on the equipment we use as part of our daily routines. Functionality and robust build quality is essential when dealing with any piece of kit. I have decided to run a Kit Review section in my newsletters to show you all some of the things that exist on the market, that we could all benefit from using. If anyone has an idea for equipment I should be reviewing, get in touch.

Over the next couple of months I will be testing the ICOM IC-M33 Floating, Waterproof VHF Marine Transceiver, kindly loaned to me from Ian Lockyer of ICOM. With this time of year being peak season for powerboat and Advanced Instructor Training courses, I will put this bit of kit through its paces and feed back to you how I get on.

RS Development of Links With RYA / Onboard

The RS Feva with its RYA Junior recognition is really coming into its own, having been taken on by lots of clubs as an intermediate progression boat to bridge the gap between the RYA Pathway boats like the Topper or Laser for double-handed crews coming together for the first time, before moving into the 29er. Wales in particular has really taken to the Feva, with lots of Yacht clubs wanting to revive falling numbers of youth sailors. If any of you have questions as to how the Feva could be used within your training, or to apply to host Feva training events, contact me direct. Some funding bodies are now giving priority grants to those wishing to use recognised classes, due to the push of youth development before the Olympics in 2012.

RS International Dealer Conference

Hayling Island Sailing Club hosted the first RS International Dealer Conference and with over 20 of our dealers taking valuable time out from their busy schedule to come and talk to us and take part in product reviews, giving much needed feedback as to how we are doing around the world. The event went smoothly and with everyone leaving Hayling with a real sense that the future for RS is looking very good. Onwards and upwards team!

RS Vision Owners Club

The committee is nearly formed, the venues for some of the 2008 events are all in, the website page on the rs-association website has been designed and is waiting upload and the owners are waiting with gleeful anticipation for the start of the 2008 season. Thank you to all that responded to the last newsletter plea for members. If you wish to join in the chat go and search for the owners’ club forum page on the Yahoo groups.

Competition time

I decided a few weeks ago that it would be a good idea to do something fun while I was out on the road. If anyone spots the RS ‘A-Team’ Van on the road or at a club near you and can e-mail me the correct date and time that I was there, I will put all the names in the hat and the lucky winner will win an RS Racing Towel, the new must have accessory for next season. There will also be a prize awarded for the best cup of tea made on club, school and centre demonstration days. Challenge on!

RS Tera
  • 2008 will see plenty more RS Tera events popping up in the calendar so if you have a small fleet of Teras in your club and want to host an event, please get in contact.

  • Thanks to Hill Head SC who have invested in a fleet of 7 boats now and are planning a regular series during the summer of 2008. Visiting sailors welcome so please contact Margaret Hyde at Hill Head SC for more information. Stick the Tera on the roof and come down to the Solent for some racing for the youngsters and some relaxing on the beach for the adults.

Thanks again for all your support and I am very encouraged by the support you are all giving me in this role. I hope to be working more closely with all of you to build relationships and further developments in both boats and training provision.

See you all during the winter and if you need any advice or have any training related queries, please call me.
