RS Development of Links With RYA / Onboard

The first Onboard Festival of Sailing at Victoria Docks in London was run By Steve Mitchell, RYA Onboard Development Officer and saw 16 Fevas training and racing during quite blustery conditions. Full Write up below.

17th August 2007

LOCAL KIDS HAVE FUN RACING IN DOCKLANDS

28 youngsters from north, south, east and west London, braved the high winds and horizontal rain at the beginning of this week (Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th August) when they took part in the RYA OnBoard Sailing Festival held in Victoria Dock.

The youngsters, aged from 9 to 17, already knew the basics of sailing from taking part in OnBoard beginner sessions. The event was organised to take the kids sailing to the next level introducing them to competitive racing.

Started in 2004, the OnBoard programme is giving over half a million young people in Britain the opportunity to try sailing and windsurfing over the next ten years. It does this by linking schools and youth groups with sailing centres and clubs helping them set up sailing sessions as part of school PE lessons, youth group or after school activities.

Event organiser Steve Mitchell explains “Many kids have been introduced to sailing through the RYA’s OnBoard project and have taken part in OnBoard beginner sessions. Keen to carry on their new hobby the festival gives these kids the opportunity to try competitive racing in a fun and relaxed environment. Through the support of many dedicated volunteer instructors and coaches we were able to keep the cost of the sailing right down meaning everyone could join in.”

Finishing touches are being made to the committee and all will be announced very soon. Look out for postings of class info and 2008 events on the Website which will soon be accessible from the www.rs-association.com website.

RS Tera update
  • RS Tera race circuit culminates in events at Plymouth Mountbatten Centre and Hill Head Sailing Club. 6 Boats raced in the Port of Plymouth Sailing Week pre-amble, enabling local Plymstock children to get coaching and racing in one day. Hill Head saw 12 RS Teras for the first coastal event of the calendar. Full details on Yachts and Yachting website and also on www.terasailing.com

  • 4 regattas this year mean that the RS Tera has set its sights on a fully packed season in 2008.

  • 2 Teras took part in the National Schools Sailing Regatta with very good results for their class. All the Schools groups questioned rated the boat very favourably, with many expressing a wish to return next year with a small fleet of Teras instead of the more traditional classes.

  • With more than 750 RS Teras sold in its first year, this fun-packed little boat is really starting to impact on the small boat market. If you still do not know what the Tera can do for you then please book your free demonstration.

My job at RS continues to develop at an amazing rate with special thanks owed to many of you who have helped me a great deal by sharing your enthusiasm and technical knowledge. Your feedback and ideas help me so much in the design and development of our range. May our working relationships continue to develop.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Southampton Boat Show.
