Southampton Boat Show 2008...

Its that time of the year again folks. Boat show season has begun and for those of you coming down to Southampton it is a great opportunity to come and see the boats and have a chat with us about your own existing fleets as well as new fleet development.

There is absolutely no need to book an appointment to see me. It is all very informal and relaxed on the RS stand. Wander down to our stand E43 down by the waterfront and ask any of the team to free me up if I’m with someone or give them a number that I can call at the show to come find you a few minutes later, if I’m already busy or just come right up and say hi. With over 1200 schools and clubs on my books I pride myself on a personal service and would love to meet you all. I’ll have a Schools pack which I’ll give you, explaining the range and the benefits plus updates on new fleet users, should you want to speak to a Club or School Manager who has come onboard as an RS Training fleet customer.

On show will be all of our Training range including the newest additions, the RS Q’
BA and the RS Tera, both of which have had an amazing year as far as fleet buyers have been concerned. For updated reviews please click on the downloadable pdf’s later in the newsletter.

The RS Elite will be on show on the pontoon and will be taking interested parties out for a short blast around the sailing area. If you are looking at buying a keelboat for your centre, why not go and have a chat with our man on the boat and maybe even catch a ride.

Fitting a trapeze pack to your RS Vision...

If you have ever wondered how you could add versatility to your existing fleet of RS Visions, the Trapeze kit makes an ideal step up for many sailors new to the sport, who have completed the RYA Adult Levels 1 and 2 and wish to progress on to some more performance related techniques. With a few simple steps you could add this useful hardware to your boat for only £99 per boat. Click here to open the PDF  for positioning of wires, rings and bungee.

RS Vision trapeze hull grip-tape Fitting guide...

Before removing the backing paper from the 3M grip tape make sure the corners have been rounded to prevent accidental peeling off when in position. Situate the tape so that it is located adjacent to the shroud U-bolt and on the non-textured surface where the gunwale curves downwards from the top-deck towards the hull. It is important not to stick anything onto the textured surface as it will not stay for long.

Use masking tape (not supplied) to mark out the area where the grip tape will end up being stuck.

Using fairly abrasive sand paper, key up the plastic of the boat so that you can see the scratches in the surface. This will help the adhesive on the tape grip to bond better once applied.

Using acetone or similar de-greaser, wipe the area after removing the masking tape.
Remove backing paper from the grip tape and apply to sanded area.
Rub down hard to assist adhesive in bonding with hull.

**Tip** The bonding will happen more effectively if the grip tape is warm before sticking down. Leave near a radiator or in the sun prior to completing the final step of this procedure.

The London Motor Show saw youngsters and adults taking to the water with the RYA ‘Try a boat’ scheme out on Royal Victoria Dock. The Hyundai Sponsored RS Teras were present and were very well received. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped me rig and de-rig the boats, especially Kaz Parker from Victoria Docks who took the photograph you see.

The 1st Hyundai sponsored RS Tera Nationals took place at Hill Head Sailing Club on the weekend of the 16 / 17th August. A mixture of 28 boats, 18 knot winds and 4 foot swell made for an exciting weekend, culminating in a closely fought 5 race series with only 1 point separating the first 2 places on day two. Developing your training fleet?

I have often been asked by those working at or running Clubs, Schools and Centres, as to what type of boat is ideal for a particular class of training environment. Our range of All Purpose Boats includes some industry leading names in which the full complement of RYA training courses can be taught. Many of the UK’s leading training establishments have either changed their fleet completely to RS Boats or have complimented their fleet with a sprinkling of market leading, innovative dinghies in order to capitalise on the extra revenue that comes from introducing a ‘new’ boat into the boat park.

If any of you are in the process of updating your fleet or are just wanting to know how our range of dinghies could help your training establishment, why not print off the attached Development plan proposal and fill the details out and send to me for a complimentary written proposal including quotation and grant funding application forms to help you make a start. As an RYA Centre Inspector and Coach / Assessor with 15 years experience in the industry, having run an LEA Centre and worked at many clubs, I am well equipped to offer you advice as to what you might need and how to use the boats in your training programme.
