Hello to you all
I am absolutely delighted to be given the chance to take
on this exciting role at RS.
From a young age I have spent a great deal of time in
sail training centres both as a participant and
Instructor. I grew up sailing on the waters of the
Norfolk Broads and began instructing at Whitlingham
Outdoor Education Centre, Norwich. During 3 years
studying in Southampton I gained a degree in Watersports
Studies and Management. A return to East Anglia saw a
new challenge working with Suffolk County Sport
Partnership to assist various sports clubs gain NGB
recognition.
During 2 years spent abroad in Turkey and Antigua I took
on the role of Watersports Manager for Sunsail Clubs,
before a return to the Industry in the UK at SailLaser
Weymouth. Extensive time in these environments has given
me good ideas of what works for a training centre. I am
delighted to have the opportunity to continue working in
this environment and believe the RS range can inspire
thousands more to get hooked on the fantastic sport of
sailing.
Over the coming days and weeks I will be getting in
touch with as many of you as possible to say hi. I am
really excited to already have appointments to come and
see some of you with Demo boats. If I can be of help in
any way, be it advice on current fleets or the
development of new ones; please do drop me a line. The
phone and email are always on...and as soon as I’m off
the water I will get back to you! |

Southampton Boatshow...
11th – 20th September once
again sees us at the Southampton Boatshow. We will as
ever have a range of RS boats on the stand ready for you
to check out. Personally I am really excited about
meeting all of you, especially those involved in clubs
and training centres. If you know when you are coming do
get in touch beforehand and we can arrange a time to
catch up. Alternatively just grab me on the stand or
give me a call if you would like to chat but are unable
to make it to the show.

Rockley Watersports Learn to
Sail... |
During the Southampton Boatshow one of
our newest and exciting RS Academies, Rockley
Watersports, will be running learn to Sail sessions in
RS Q’BA’s. Taking place straight off the Pontoons at the
show, you can ‘Get Afloat’ by signing up at the booking
tent (Stand B0001A). Sessions last 2 hours and will
offer a great chance to take to the waters for the first
time with experienced, professional Instructors.
To add to the excitement, EuroMillions are getting
involved by displaying Lottery numbers on the sails of
the 6 RS Q’BA’s – could you be lucky!
|
|
 |
|
Exhibitors need not miss out on the
action. Throughout the show you will have the
opportunity to take a Q’BA for a spin around the course
and set a time for everyone else to beat. Can you beat
the RS staff?! |
|
|
Q’BA... |
Our APB range is by no coincidence ideally suited for
the rigors and requirements of training centres. Through
careful design and much liaison with you guys, our boats
have a proven track record of successfully helping
beginners become accomplished sailors.
|
On this note we have made an exciting
addition to the Q’BA. To make it even more comfortable
to sail double handed, a second attachment for the
mainsheet block is being positioned further aft. Sailing
single handed you can have the main coming from the
forward attachment point. When doubling up simply move
it back to allow equal room for helm and crew...perfect
for sailing schools going two’s up or parents teaching
their kids. This adaptation has come from input from
those of you out there using the boats. We really do
value your experiences with the boats...so please keep
them coming!

RS in the Middle East... |
|
|
RS are delighted to be breaking new
ground in the Middle East. With various projects to
supply boats in the pipeline, Oman Sail have already
made the decision to go RS. With operations spanning a
custom built 105ft Trimaran and 2 Extreme 40 Cat’s, Oman
Sail have selected the RS Q’BA as their primary teaching
boat for their Watersports Academy. Chosen for the
versatility it offers through it’s suitability for both
youngsters and adults, the success and popularity of the
Q’BA continue to grow. With Oman Sail also kitted out
with RS Visions and Feva’s, the signs are that many
others in the Middle East are set to follow.

RS100 Update... |
|
|
After going public in June regarding the
RS100 development programme, we were inundated with
interest from sailors in the UK and around the world. We
have never seen a response like this before. In fact,
there were so many keen people talking to various
members of our team about the 100 and then saying they
wanted a boat as soon as production starts that we
started to lose track of the situation. We had already
said we’d offer a special deal on the first one hundred
RS100s, so in early July we decided that the fairest way
was to launch that offer and start taking deposits. This
way we know who’s serious and can create a fair build
schedule. We already have names against the first
seventy three boats (!!) so if you’re keen, don’t hang
around.
|
|
 |
|
Development of the RS100 is continuing
and you can follow it on our
blog on RSsailing.com. The hull design was very well
liked straight out of the box, so after considerable
sailing and consultation only minor mods were made
before signing it off and making plugs. Rig development
is more time consuming and will continue through the
autumn. |

RS Academy Update...
We’ve seen some interesting developments to the RS
Academies – our premier training partners – for 2009
which has really consolidated the UK network with a
neatly spread range of sailing centres where students
can learn in an RS.
The addition of Rockley Watersports and Datchet
Watersports earlier in the year further reinforces the
team. Now that we have a full network we can really
start developing the way that we promote the venues to
our customers and help publicise their existence. There
are still some spaces left for some regions – if you
think you’d like to be involved, drop me a line to talk
through our plans and your eligibility.
Lest we forget the enormous number of
other training venues that use RS equipment and are not
RS Academies, a new scheme for the 2010 season will be
useful for all those places that love training students
in their RS boats, but are not quite big enough to be
eligible for RS Academy status. Watch this space for
updates here.

Review section... |
Read the reviews or ask for the number of a fleet user
for an informal discussion about how our boats are used
in your type of training environment.

These attachments can be very useful if
comparing boats for your fleet. Written with feedback from
unbiased sailors, they can often be the precursor for a
demonstration day at your club. Click on the picture to

|
I plan to be out and about meeting as many of you as
possible over the coming weeks. I’m all kitted out with
the RS van and boats, my only slight concern........my
road trailer. Supposedly designed to allow an individual
to load 3 boats single handed using a winch mechanism,
my latest attempt at Bewl Valley Sailing Club involved
myself, the Club Pro and 2 Instructors. Maybe you will
be there to witness my maiden single-handed loading!
|
I look forward to building and
maintaining strong relationships with you all.
Happy Sailing
