Last month, Swiss SailGP Team athletes Arnaud Psarofaghis (wing trimmer), Bryan Mettraux (flight controller) and Arno de Planta (reserve and pathway athlete), joined Swiss Disabled Sailing and participants of the first RS Venture Inclusive Swiss Cup (15-18 May 2025) for a special One Sport training and sailing session, held just before the start of their regatta in Nyon.
Swiss SailGP Team is committed to using its platform to promote inclusivity in sport and equal opportunities. Since joining the global Championship, together with its main and Race for the Future partner, Stiftelsen VI (WE Foundation), the team has hosted four One Sport races; Cádiz, Copenhagen, two in Oslo, and now, for the first time, a session on home waters in Switzerland.
Arno de Planta said: “The goal of the One Sport concept is to demonstrate that our sport is accessible to everyone, and that sailing can be truly inclusive. It was fantastic to meet and sail with the sailors competing in the RS Venture Inclusive Swiss Cup and learn more about their race boat. We had the perfect conditions here on the Lake, it was a great afternoon of sailing.”
The RS Venture Connect SCS is a versatile and adaptive sailing boat, designed to be helmed and crewed by sailors of all abilities. Sailing remains one of the few sports in which athletes with and without disabilities can compete together on equal terms.
Swiss Disabled Sailing, based in Nyon, was founded in 1991 and has continued to develop and evolve to show sailing is a sport accessible to people with all types of physical, mental, sensory or social disabilities. Michel Darbre, Founding President of Swiss Disabled Sailing said: “It is a great honour for us to welcome sailors from Switzerland SailGP Team and be able to share their knowledge and great professional experience in sailing. Collaborations like this show what’s possible with the right mindset and we had a fantastic afternoon sailing together here on the Lake.”
Bjørnar Erikstad, a four-time Paralympian, multiple World Champion, and CEO of the WE Foundation, added: “Sailing has a unique opportunity to show the rest of the sporting world how inclusion can be achieved – by combining adaptive design with a mindset that creates opportunities for everyone. We hope sport can become a platform that fosters resilience and confidence in all areas of life.”
