What is PE3? The Built-to-Last Advantage in RS Boats
When it comes to building boats that are tough and reliable, construction is everything. At RS Sailing, a selection of boats in our training, beach and adventure ranges are created using a method known as rotomoulded polyethylene construction. This manufacturing technique produces hulls that are incredibly durable, naturally buoyant, and virtually maintenance-free.
But what really sets our boats apart is the advanced three stages – the PE3 construction. So, what is PE3 and how does it work?
The Science Behind PE3
PE3 refers to the three-layer polyethylene structure used in the hulls. Each layer plays a specific role in delivering strength, performance, and longevity:
1. Super-Linear Polyethylene (Outer Layer)
This tough, stiff material forms the outer skin of the hull. It’s designed to be scratch-resistant and impact-tough, making it ideal for withstanding the knocks and scrapes of everyday sailing, training, or beach landings.
2. Foaming Polyethylene (Middle Layer)
The middle layer is where the magic happens. By using foaming polyethylene, we can add extra thickness and buoyancy without adding unnecessary weight. This layer enhances structural strength while keeping the boat light and agile on the water.
3. General Purpose Polyethylene (Inner Layer)
On the inside, we use a standard polyethylene layer to seal the boat and create a smooth internal finish. It’s not only functional but also adds to the clean, professional appearance.
All three materials are specifically engineered for rotational moulding, a process that evenly distributes the polyethylene during manufacturing to ensure a consistent, high-quality finish across the entire hull.
Boats Featuring PE3 Construction
PE3 construction is a core feature in many of our most popular and trusted models, including:
Whether you’re training beginners, exploring with family, or racing on the weekend, PE3 delivers the durability and performance that sailors trust.
Why It Matters
Boats built with PE3 construction are stronger, safer, and simpler to own. The triple-layer design resists wear and tear, offers added flotation, and reduces the need for constant upkeep – so you can spend more time sailing and less time maintaining.
