For the RS21 Class in Lakewood, Texas, there is a returning sense of normalcy, even if it is a kind of new normal. After postponing the 2021 RS21 North Americans due to Covid concerns, the club is excited to be hosting the event this weekend, November 12th – November 13th. This year is the second annual RS21 North Americans; the inaugural event was held at Lakewood in the summer of 2020.
This year’s event will feature eleven teams from across North America. While most of the teams competing are local sailors, the regatta will include a team from Dallas as well as a team from Canada. Though smaller than its previous iteration, LYC is excited that they are able to host the event and get back out on the water after such a long and challenging year. “This year’s event is a bit tamer compared to last year, but we could not be more excited to be back out on the water and hosting this event,” says Event Chair Marie Wise.
Lakewood offers a distinctively unique opportunity for competing sailors, to charter a boat from their club-owned fleet of RS21s. Instead of trailering and traveling with their own boat, sailors are able to use a club provided boat. Purchased in late 2019, Lakewood was an early adapter in a growing trend of clubs purchasing fleets of boats for members to charter and sail for minimal cost. Their fleet will be on display this weekend with the majority of boats already chartered for the event.
