Earlier this year, U Sail Bermuda took delivery of 6 new RS Zest sailboats which are the first RS Zests on the island. The RS Zest is designed to be the most up-to-date best-single-handed sailboat for clubs and commercial training centres for not only the beginner market for RYA adult level 1 and 2 but also for the youth stages 1 and 2. This was because of the demand for a boat which could be adapted to have a jib when not reefed.
Why did U Sail Bermuda opt for the RS Zest? Thomas Penruddocke, director of activities at U Sail lists the reasons, stating that “The RS Zest is no question the best single hander on the market currently, due to being more stable than any other similar boat. This is important as we do not cater purely to young sailors but also to adults wishing to take to the water on our RYA start sailing courses. The second factor for us was the ability to have up to 3 kids in the boat for our school programs, enabling us to have 18 young sailors sailing in our fleet of 6 boats. This means we can enable more participation in sailing here in Bermuda.
Finally, the RS Zest has one unique feature that it has a pivoting centerboard which means it prevents damage from groundings as is experienced with similar sized boats with daggerboards that do not ‘kick up’ the same way as the rudder does.” We also love the additional rowing packs that come with the RS zest, as you can convert it from a sailing dinghy to a rowing boat on days where there is no wind or simply as an alternative activity to complement sailing.”
As newly appointed RS brand ambassadors, U Sail is proud to be able to have a fleet of RS Zests available for taster sessions and for rental / charter. As a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training centre, U Sail are able to offer a range of formal tuition, ranging from beginner level up to and including instructor training.
