Yodare is an epic sailing challenge taken on by the hugely inspirational Ken Fowler. His goal is to become the first ever single-handed dinghy to sail around all the islands of England and Wales. That’s over 250 islands and over 1200 miles of sailing, all in an RS Aero, which is as small as two bathtubs (and at times just as wet!).
Ken’s aim was to raise £50,000 for Cancer Research and Oakhaven Hospice, two life-changing charities for so many people facing the challenge that is cancer. Having lost his father to cancer, he wanted to help all those people out there who have a family member, or friend, facing this devastating disease. Find out more about Ken’s story here.
So what has he achieved so far? He has sailed around 261 islands, sailed 1,265 miles and raised £64,432, but the adventure isn’t over yet. With one island still to go and an unabating urge to raise even more donations for Cancer Research UK and the Oakhaven Hospice, we thought we would reach out to the RS community to help support these great causes and set you a challenge…
Challenge 50 – What is it? This is your opportunity to be inspired by Ken and set your very own challenge between the 1st – 30th of June! Whether that’s 50 hours of sailing, 50 capsizes, 50 720 turns, 50 roll gybes, sail 50 laps of your home club sail area, get 50 RS sailors together to race, bake 50 cakes and fundraise with them at your sailing club after racing, the world is really your oyster. In the meantime, Ken will be embarking on his final challenge when he gets a suitable weather window, sailing around his final island, the Isle of Wight.
“So many of my adventure sailing days have been long, lonely, sails, so I’m really looking forward to sharing this final part of the adventure with you all and following all your crazy challenge 50 ideas. Together we can all make a difference to two amazing charities through our love of sailing – doesn’t get much better than that!” said Ken Fowler.
How do you enter the challenge? It’s really simple but will take some level of ‘self policing’, which as sailors, we’re all well accustomed to!
Step One – Set and complete your own personal ‘Challenge 50’.
Step Two – Make a donation to one of Yodare’s Just Giving Pages, however big or small, to Cancer Research or Oakhaven Hospice.
Step Three – Email info@rssailing.com with your name, RS Class, a quick description of your challenge and a quick screen grab of proof of your donation.
Step Four – RS Sailing will publish and celebrate every ‘Challenge 50’ here.
Step Five – RS Sailing and Ken Fowler will choose the top 5 challenges from the submissions by 7th July 2023, and the lucky few will receive RS Goodie Bundles in the post as a thank you.
