It is with great excitement that the RS21 International Class Association announces the 2024 World Championship will be held in L’Escala, Spain, 24th – 28th September.
Located in the Bay of Roses, L’Escala is home to classic Costa Brava sailing conditions. Reliable thermal winds are generated by the large flat land mass to the west, while it is far enough north to be unaffected by the mountains of Barcelona. The RS21 Class is most at home in a breeze and L’Escala promises 12-20 knots when looking at the historical data.
Consistent wind in L’Escala is accompanied by spectacular scenery; hidden caves, rocky cliffs, tiny coves and wide beaches all dot along the coastline. UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the ruins of Empúries and the Montgrí and the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Parks are just some of the stunning attractions to see nearby – and we’ve heard the sunsets are pretty magical too!
“Great sailing, fantastic heritage, stunning nature – what’s not to love?” Nick Redding, RS21 International Class Manager. He continues “This year, we want to go even bigger than before. L’Escala, Girona, is an amazing location for racing and families. The local area has a mix of beaches, restaurants and historic sites which will mean that the time off the water will be as spectacular as the racing on it. We are looking forward to the 2024 World Championship and I’m sure the famous Spanish hospitality awaits the RS21 Class!”
Club Nàutic of l’Escala has a long history in Olympic Classes and most recently played host to the Optimist World Championships in 2023. With a wide range of services and modern facilities, the marina has plenty of space for the anticipated entries for the 2024 RS21 World Championship. It is looking forward to welcoming the ultimate one-design racing class with their famous hospitality.
The Notice of Race will be released in early 2024 on RS Sailing Club and the class is looking forward to welcoming back both seasoned sailors and new generations alike as the RS21 rapidly grows in popularity. Each year, the Worlds grow in numbers. In 2023, 55 boats were hosted in Italy, and early indications for 2024 estimate at least 80 boats will head to L’Escala for the third hosting of the RS21 World Championship.
