1400 sailors, 10 Olympic events, 6 days of epic racing… the Allianz Sailing World Championships 2023 opened yesterday in The Hague, Netherlands.
While this is the 6th edition of the sailing World Championships, this year is the first time Para Sailing will be included. The Para Sailing events will be held on Braassemermeer; a 425 hectare lake in the north of South Holland. There are 4 sailing classes; Women’s Hansa 303, Men’s Hansa 303, 2.4mR and RS Venture Connect.
Athletes will be competing for medals across the 4 classes on an individual level and, for another first, they will also be competing for the ‘Nations Bowl’ on a national level. This will be awarded to the nation who gets the best combined score of all sailors across the 4 classes.
The RS Venture Connect class has 8 boats provided by the venue in partnership with RS Sailing. An impressive 16 teams will be competing with crews switching boats between races.
Classifications are being held today and all nationals are invited to grab their flags and participate in the Opening Ceremony on the 10th August. Racing will be held over the 11th to 16th August and final celebrations will take place with the closing ceremony on the 20th August.
RS Sailing’s Dan Jaspers, International Sales and Business Development, is at the event:
“I am pleased to see the Para World Sailing Championships coming to the Netherlands and that the RS Venture Connect class has once again been chosen by World Sailing as equipment for this important regatta. RS Sailing has long supported inclusivity within sailing and to see so many countries represented at the 2023 Para Worlds is a good indicator that the work we have done to grow participation in inclusive sailing activity globally has paid off. On behalf of the entire RS Marine team, I wish all teams the very best for what promises to be an amazing event.”
Best of luck to all sailors taking part! Keep up to date with the racing and event results on the official Notice Board.
