With nine RS21s participating in 2023 Charleston Race Week, it’s shaping up to be a truly epic event. Described as a regatta unlike any other, the 27th Anniversary of Charleston Race Week promises incredibly close racing in the RS21 fleet and fantastic socials on shore! Running from 20th April to April 23rd 2023, this is the pinnacle regatta of the season and a must-do event on the international racing scene.
Sailors from all corners of the US will be sailing the RS21 thanks to the provision of some charter boats along with on-the-water support from RS Sailing. Here’s some of the fantastic crews that will be battling it out on the water later on this week:
- Giorgio Martelli will be joining from Lakewood Yacht Club, who launched an RS21 programme with 12 boats two years ago.
- Jonas Berg of Selden North America is graciously loaning his boat out to Team Spectrum Sailing, who are the only US organization focused on creating opportunities for autistic individuals to learn to sail.
- Clemson University Sailing Team will be making up two RS21 Teams.
Leading up to the event here’s a quote from RS21 helm, Giorgio Martelli from Lakewood Yacht Club, “Charleston Race Week has been on my bucket list for a long time. Now with RS making a fleet of charter boats available, it has made it possible for me and my loyal crew to realise this dream. We are a group of four friends and have been racing the RS21 at club level in Houston. Lucky that Lakewood Yacht Club launched the RS21 program two years ago with 12 boats. Now we have a chance to measure up with the best in Charleston with a boat that we know how to sail and love. Exciting”.
The RS21’s partnership with Vakaros will be showcased at Charleston Race Week. Vakaros have kindly provided RaceSense for all teams taking part in the RS21 Class racing, which will deliver a game changing experience for sailors, event organizers and spectators!
