“Why would I buy an RS Aero?” say all the Laser sailors. “There are 40-50 Lasers racing in our frostbite fleet every weekend in the winter, and Laser regattas to go to every weekend in the summer, and huge major championships like North Americans and Masters Worlds. Plus you can buy a decent second-hand Laser for $2,000. Why would I want to buy an RS Aero?”
Everything they say is true of course (allowing perhaps for a slight case of exaggeration by sailors passionate about their class.)
And yet…
Something motivated me (and others) to order an RS Aero on the first day orders were being taken in North America. Why – when there are cheaper and more popular options? More broadly, why would anyone be among the first to adopt a new class? Even when a new boat is clearly superior in every way to the boat you are now sailing, why would you be the first to jump off the cliff?
I can only speak for myself so here are the reasons why I decided to buy an RS Aero.
1. After 30 years of Laser racing in regattas near and far, frostbiting every winter, and every year sailing many days by myself or with a small group of friends just for fun… it was starting to get a little old…
