RS Sailing is excited to be partnering with Eastern Yacht Club for the 2021 Chubb US Junior Championship. A fleet of RS21s will be used for the event which runs from August 10th to August 14th and is comprised of three fleets: singlehanded (Smythe), doublehanded (Bemis) and multihanded (Sears). This year marks the historic 100th anniversary of the Sears Cup; the historic nature of the event is emphasized in its location at EYC, the same venue that hosted the inaugural Sears Cup in 1921. “The original Sears Championship regatta was instituted 100 years ago by EYC Commodore Sears to honour his father, the second EYC Commodore, to promote competitive youth sailing around Marblehead Harbor,” says Vice Commodore Peter Frisch.
While EYC is excited to continue the tradition and legacy of the event they are excited to try new things and advance the sport. Event chair Hannah Lynn says, “as the host of the inaugural Sears Cup, EYC is excited to continue its trailblazing role in this new era in competitive keelboat racing, and to introduce the RS21 to the renowned Marblehead sailing scene.”
With its stable hull form and low sheet load, among other features, the RS21 is the perfect boat to use for youth multihanded sailing. “The boat fits Commodore Sear’s original goal of promoting youth keelboat sailing while moving the sport toward both cost-effectiveness and high performance,” Lynn says. “This combination has been hard to find in the sailing world in the past, especially for younger sailors.”
