The RS21 racing season gets underway in just over a month with The Primo Cup (3-6 March 2022) at the Yacht Club Monaco. Entries are coming in thick and fast from all across Europe, and you could be there too, with five charter boats still available.
This will be the first time the thriving RS21 Class will join The Primo Cup, which was launched in 1985 at the instigation of HSH Prince Albert II. A year after becoming the Yacht Club de Monaco’s president, the Primo Cup has established itself as an unmissable event that opens the season in the Mediterranean for Europe’s one-design elite.
The International RS21 Class is growing from strength to strength and attracting more and more like-minded sailors like the 2021 Italian RS21 Cup Champion, Gianluca Grisoli in Beyond Freedom has already signed up to ensure they start the ’22 season as strong as possible. As have 3rd & 4th place finishers, Pietro Negri in Stenghele and Carlo Brenco in Gioia, more Italian’s are expected to enter as they prepare for another highly competitive season.
From the Netherlands, Michiel Geerling on Rafiki will be back after an 11th place at the European Championship last year, looking for a strong start to the European Tour.
From Germany, Julius Hornung is excited to return to the RS21 after a successful 10th place at last year’s Europeans. Julius and his tactician Lukas will be joined by new recruits Henrik and Elias, who bring both big boat and skiff sailing pedigree, and they are hoping it will be a winning formula.
Former French 49er campaigner, Nico Honor, will be using the event to build experience in the run-up to the first RS21 World Championship in October and is hoping for home field advantage both at the Primo Cup and the World Championship.
From Poland, Match Racer and manager of the Polish Sailing League will be on the start line and is hopeful that his match racing skills will give him the advantage he needs to take the win.
From the UK, father and son crew of Keith and Liam Willis are looking to build on their fourth place finish in the Corinthian division of last years European Championship at the start of a year-long campaign aiming for the Corinthian title at the world championship.
From Norway, Henrik Bordal will be leading a young team (all under 24), all friends from competing in dinghies, this will be their first major RS21 event, but with lots of small keelboat experience between them, they are hoping that their youth will give them their advantage.
