Testimonial by Jonathan Couper-Smartt, New Zealand
As a beginner Laser sailor who has just made the jump to the RS Aero, I can confirm that everything you have read about the RS Aero is true. This boat is quite simply a better-planned, better-implemented, lighter, faster, higher-quality, more attractive single-handed racing dinghy.
Specifically: It’s faster, easier, and more fool-proof to rig. The components and rigging are better-made, better laid-out, and more intuitive. The on-the-water is more exciting and responsive. The self-draining works perfectly, and the boat handles beautifully via the well-placed, centrally-organized control lines. You have a better sailing position than a Laser, with more headroom.
Perhaps the only “negative” thing I did find is that because the boat is so light, you do need to hold onto it of you capsize, since the wind will blow it away from you if you’re not careful. But I had no trouble righting or re-boarding after flipping.
No, this is quite simply a very, very, very good boat. The RS Aero is one of those rare products where the hype is 100% justified.
