Rutland Sailing Club will be welcoming 50 RS Aeros to the midlands for the third edition of the UK RS Aero Youth Championships 19 – 21 July. The RS Aero 5 fleet has grown significantly from previous years with 40 entries, and a hugely competitive fleet of 9 sailors in the RS Aero 7.
RS Sailing are providing a large fleet of charter boats which has enabled sailors from other classes to race the RS Aero and see what all the fuss is about! Peter Barton and Ben Rolfe will be hosting a coaching session on Friday 19th afternoon which will be a fantastic initiation for those new to the RS Aero Class. A barbecue, beach games and DJ set after racing on Saturday will make for a fantastic weekend.
Ned Stattersfield will be defending the RS Aero 7 Youth Champion title after winning last year’s event in Lymington however, he will be chased hard by Noah Rees who won the 2019 RS Aero 7 Inland Championship. Tim Hire, who won the Winter Series, will also be looking towards the podium at this event. A new addition to the fleet, Ellie Craig, showed the boys how it is done last weekend at Lymington. Another one to watch is the super speedy Chris Hatton, who has won a couple of open meetings recently. Exciting stuff!
There are a lot of new faces in the RS Aero 5 fleet which makes this one hard to call! Jonathan Bailey won the RS Aero 5 Spring Championships earlier in the year, Josie Meredith won the Sustainability Open at Burghfield sailing club and William Caiger was a lead runner at last year’s UK National Championships in the RS Aero 7s! With so many great new sailors in the fleet and 40 RS Aero 5s on the start line, this title is going to be hard-fought for sure.
A big thank you to Rooster and Harken for their generous support of the RS Aero Youth National Championships. The RS Aero UK Nationals at North Berwick, Scotland, following on from the Youth Championships at Rutland, with many young sailors travelling north straight afterwards to combine the two regattas with a few days in Scotland in between.
Stay tuned across social media to keep up with all the action! Good luck to all the Youth sailors this weekend.
